HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Puskaric (R-Washington/Allegheny) today announced that he has been appointed to serve on the House Commerce, Education, Insurance, and Labor and Industry committees for the 2019-20 legislative session. Puskaric was sworn into office for his first term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Jan. 1.

“These assignments are excellent opportunities for me to contribute to important matters of public policy, particularly with regard to the needs of the people I represent in the 39th Legislative District,” said Puskaric. “Before any bill comes to the House floor, it must be reviewed and refined at the committee level. This is where the real legwork is done in the legislative process.”

The Commerce Committee is responsible for originating legislation and overseeing implementation of programs which affect Pennsylvania companies. The committee has primary jurisdiction over corporate governance through the business corporation law, as well as regulation of offers of sale and credit through such statutes as the Goods and Services Installment Sales Act, the Unfair Sales Act, and the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Act.

The Education Committee works on state issues involving public and private schools, encompassing pre-K through grade 12 basic education, as well as post-secondary education.

“Educating children is the key to our future economic strength,” said Puskaric. “Learning creates the bridge to employment and opportunity. And assuring that bridge is built for young people is one of my primary responsibilities as a member of the General Assembly.”

The House Insurance Committee helps oversee the Insurance Department and ensure any legislation running through the House that pertains to insurance matters is studied with extreme care.

The Labor and Industry Committee focuses on issues impacting jobs across the state. Legislation the committee deals with includes unemployment compensation, job training, child labor laws, workers’ compensation and the Prevailing Wage Act.

“My committee assignments will keep me busy,” said Puskaric. “I am eager to get to work and make sure all my constituents are represented in the best way.”
