HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Puskaric (R-Allegheny/Washington) announced today that Elizabeth Township was awarded a $17.3 million Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) low-interest loan to address overflows into the Youghiogheny River and its tributaries due to capacity issues at the Buena Vista Treatment Plant and Boston Pump Station.

PENNVEST awarded the loan to pay for a new force main to be installed to convey sewage to the location of the current Boston Pump Station, which will be upgraded to pump sewage through a single force main to the Municipal Authority of McKeesport for treatment. In addition, a new pump station will be constructed at the current Buena Vista Treatment Plant location.

“This will solve a major problem with the pump station that serves nearly 5,000 residential customers,” said Puskaric. “This project will reduce wet weather overflows into a stream and potentially impact downstream water suppliers.”

In 2016, the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection (DEP) issued an order to Elizabeth Township requiring that the township convey all sewage to McKeesport facilities.

“The project is consistent with land use planning and farmland preservation efforts,” said Puskaric. “This funding will go a long way toward cost-effectively maintaining and upgrading our sewer infrastructure without imposing crippling rate increases. I was happy to do my part to advocate for this project.”

PENNVEST funding comes from a combination of state funds approved by voters, federal grants to PENNVEST from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and recycled loan repayments from previous PENNVEST funding awards. Funds for the projects are disbursed after bills for work are paid and receipts are submitted to PENNVEST.

Puskaric serves the 39th Legislative District which includes parts of Bethel Park in addition to Elizabeth, Elizabeth Township, Forward Township, Jefferson Hills, West Elizabeth, and parts of South Park Township in Allegheny County, plus, Finleyville, Nottingham Township, Somerset Township and Union Township in Washington County.
