JEFFERSON HILLS – Rep. Mike Puskaric (R-Allegheny/Washington) announced today that the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) awarded a total $142,551 for regional development projects in Washington and Allegheny counties.

In Washington County, Union Township was awarded a $71,276 grant to begin the second phase of the new Elrama Central Park construction. This phase of the community park provides accessibility and inclusive features such as ADA playscapes, wheelchair-accessible swings, paved pathways with railing to the recreation areas, and trees/landscaping for open field activity. The total project cost is $175,798.

South Park Township in Allegheny County received a $71,275 grant for the Evans Park Complex. This is a major hub in the township encompassing six baseball fields, two soccer fields, two playgrounds, batting cages, basketball court and six pavilions. During peak periods of attendance, more than 600 people may be present in the park. Currently, only portable toilets are in use at Evans Park. This project will construct a new restroom facility. The total project cost is $169,710.

“These grants represent valuable investments in ensuring outdoor activities for our residents,” said Puskaric. “Outdoor recreation is a powerful economic engine. It attracts various athletic tournaments to the complex and benefits public health, quality of life, property values and the local tax base.”

The grants were awarded by CFA through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, which is funded by impact fees assessed on drilling in the Marcellus Shale under Act 13 of 2012.

“I’m pleased to assist with securing this important funding,” said Puskaric. “During the pandemic, we were forced to stay indoors and not be in close contact with people. Now that many of the restrictions have been lifted, there has never been a better time and a bigger need to enjoy the benefits of nature.”
